It's hard to imagine spring is right around the corner when we just got 2 feet of snow dumped on us here in Massachusetts, but it is! I promise!
I try try to use the energy of the seasons to my benefit when it comes to my health. In the winter, I eat foods that are cooked longer and slower, warming and grounding. There is often a bit higher fat content and my food is prepared with the intention of creating strength and warmth. In the summer, I eat much more raw food, with lots of fresh vegetables like greens, tomatoes and herbs. The intention of my summer cooking is to create a cooling and refreshing effect.
The spring is is probably my favorite time of transition. It's like waking from hibernation and having the opportunity to refuel. Spring is a time when we can set a new intention for our health and wellness and the energy is naturally there to support our efforts. It takes less forcing to get the job done, and often results are a definite.
My my favorite spring program is a gentle detox. The term detox is one I use reluctantly, as there is much confusion of the true term. I often use reset in place of detox, but today we are going to stick with detox.
Our bodies are actually detoxing everyday, it's what we are made to do. Our major detox organs are our lungs, our liver, our skin, our kidneys and our colon. Through proper function of these organs, ideally we eliminate the toxins we take in through food, air, water everyday.
Our current environmental conditions are not so pure anymore. We have so many chemicals literally surrounding us, that our bodies are overloaded and can't keep up with the detox process as efficiently as we one did. Signs of toxicity include weight gain, poor skin conditions, aches and pains, headaches, hormonal disruptions and so many more.
So, what can we do about it?
It it is an excellent idea to clean up our act. Take a look at the products you are buying and using from bodycare, shampoo, soap, lotion, makeup, cleaning supplies and everything in between. The average woman is applying over 500 chemicals to her body per DAY. This is frightening! There is very little regulation in the cosmetics industry, and it is wise to reduce your use of commercial products. Sadly, baby lotions and soaps are no exception.
The quality of food and water you are consuming is also very important. Are you eating mainly processed foods or Whole Foods with lots of fresh veggies? Could you install a water filter or find a local spring where you can collect water for drinking? Can you buy a few key organic ingredients instead of conventionally grown?
Can you replace some of your plastic food storage containers with glass? Use a glass or stainless steel water bottle rather than plastic? Even BPA free plastics are still leaching into our foods. Can you use your microwave less or better yet, get rid of it?
There are many steps we can take to lessen our toxic load when it comes to our diet. Using the upward, rising and gently expanding energy of spring to our benefit will only help you get better results. Adding key herbs and supplements can also help get you feeling (and looking!) your very best.
